In Memory

Three of our birds are no longer with the flock. We keep them here so their names stay with the farm.

Spike

Spike is the black bird on the left.

Spike came home in February 2025 as one of the original eight straight-run chicks from Tractor Supply, alongside D, Willow, Cleopatra, Kerrigan, Annabelle, Emily Dickinson and Rogue. He was one of the birds who taught us how to keep chickens at all: the first coop, the first winter, the first eggs. We still say his name around here.

Cleopatra was also part of that first group of eight from February 2025. She grew up in the same brooder, the same run, the same routine of morning and afternoon checks. Losing a bird from the original eight takes a piece of the beginning of this farm with it. We are grateful she was one of ours.

Hagrid

Hagrid came in with the second batch of nineteen chicks in April 2026, the same group as Apollo and Ghost. He never made it into the rooster coop. He got sick before he was old enough to move over with D and Willow, and he spent more than a month in special care. When it was clear he would not recover from his injuries, we put him down. Apollo and Ghost are in the rooster coop now, with D and Willow.
